【国際経済学科】Guten Tag! ドイツから新しい仲間を迎えました
Guten Tag！新学期が始まり、国際経済学科にドイツから新しい仲間が加わりました。ビセット教授の指導の下、研究生として卒業論文執筆のため福山大学で4ヵ月を過ごすそうです。そのお知らせがビセット教授から届きましたので、学科学長室ブログ委員の足立が紹介します。

経済学部研究生のMoritz SCHULZさんを本学に迎えます！「モーリッツ」はドイツのプフォルツハイム大学で経営学を専攻し、国際経済学科のイアン・ジェームス・ビセット教授の指導の下、卒業論文を執筆します。
ドイツの大学の学生が、広島県にある福山大学の教員の指導の下で、ドイツのプフォルツハイム大学の卒業論文を書くという、非常に興味深く、ユニークな状況であります。なぜこのようなことになったのでしょうか？
モーリッツは常に異国の文化、特に日本のような母国と大きく異なる国に興味を持っていました。そこで、学部3年のときに来日し、広島市内の中規模私立大学で半年間学びました。在学中に福山大学のビセット教授の講義を受け、教授の研究分野に興味を持っていました。日本人の外国への投資と、それが金融市場にどのような影響を与えるかということです。
残念ながら、彼の出身大学にはそのような専門知識を持つ者はいなかったので、もし日本で適当な指導教員が見つかれば、卒業論文の指導のためにその人を副指導教員として指定してくれるとのことでした。そこで、モーリッツは交換留学先の日本の大学に、同大学で卒業論文を書くことができるかどうか尋ねました。すると、英語での卒業論文を指導できる人はいないと言われました。そこで、ビセット教授に福山大学での研究の可能性を打診しました。
ビセット教授にはこのような経験がなかったため、伊丹国際センター長と大塚学長に相談しました。大塚学長は、ビセット教授以外にも、福山大学には英語での研究指導が可能な日本人教員が少なからずおり、このような国際交流は大歓迎であると述べました。伊丹国際センター長は、適切なビザの取得方法についていくつか有益な提案をしてくれました。そこで来日ビザを取得し、モーリッツを研究生として受け入れることにしました。プフォルツハイム大学は正式にビセット教授に研究指導を依頼し、モーリッツは4月12日に到着しました。
学内では、図書館やブルームバーグ端末（金融データ）を使って研究したり、ビセット教授のゼミに参加したり、日本語の勉強に励んだりする予定です。モーリッツはGCC (Global Communication Club) に参加しますので、会いたい方は是非ご参加ください！キャンパスでモーリッツを見かけたら、”Guten Tag”、”こんにちは！”、“Hello!”と声をかけてください。

We would like to welcome Moritz SCHULZ, a research student in Economics to our university! Moritz has completed his coursework in Business Administration at Pforzheim University in Germany and will write his graduation thesis under the supervision of Professor Ian James BISSET in the Department of International Economics.
This is quite an interesting and unique situation: a student from a German University writing a thesis under the supervision of a faculty member from Fukuyama University, in Fukuyama, for a graduation from Pforzheim University in Germany. How did this come about??
Moritz has always been interested in different and foreign cultures, particularly a country like Japan, which seemed so different from his home country. So, in his third year of undergraduate study, he came to Japan to study for six months at a medium sized private university in Hiroshima city. While studying there, he attended a series of lectures taught by Professor Bisset of Fukuyama University and became interested in his field of study: Japanese citizens investment in foreign countries and how that affects the financial markets.
Unfortunately, there was no one with that kind of expertise at his home university but if he found a suitable advisor in Japan, they were willing to designate that person as his sub-advisor for the purpose of advising the graduation thesis. So he asked the Japanese university where he was on exchange if he could do his graduation thesis there. He was told that they didn’t have anyone that could supervise him to write a thesis in English. So he approached Professor Bisset about the possibility to research at Fukuyama University.
Professor Bisset had no experience with this kind of situation and so consulted with International Center Director Itami and President Otsuka for guidance. President Otsuka noted that in addition to Professor Bisset that there were quite a few Japanese faculty at Fukuyama University that are capable of supervising research in English and that we welcome such international exchange. International Center Director Itami had several useful suggestions regarding how to obtain an appropriate visa. So we embarked on the journey of getting a visa to come to Japan and admitting Moritz as a research student. Pforzheim University formally asked Professor Bisset to act as research supervisor and Moritz arrived on April 12th.
While on campus, Moritz will conduct his research using our Library and our Bloomberg terminal (Financial data resource), join in Bisset’s seminar, and try and learn more Japanese. He will be attending GCC so if you would like to meet him, please join us there! If you see him on campus please say “Guten Tag”, “Konnichiwa”, or “Hello!”
学長から一言：モーリッツ・シュルツさん、福山大学へようこそ！ ドイツのプフォルツハイム大学に提出する卒論を福山大学で国際経済学科のビセット教授などから指導を受けながら完成させるために研究生として滞在できて良かったですね。是非とも立派な論文を仕上げてください。来学早々に、マスコットのヤギの福と大からの歓迎も受けたようですね。

How nice it is! We hope you will complete a wonderful thesis. I am also glad to know that you were already welcomed by our mascot goats, “Fuku” and “Dai” named after our university right after you arrived here.
