【大学教育センター】米インディアナ大学・米ボールステート大学から実習生が来学！

米国インディアナ大学の「グローバル・ゲートウェイズ・プログラム」を通じて福山大学に来学した、3名の新しい実習生を紹介する記事が、鈴木ヘザーアン講師より寄せられました。大学教育センター・学長室ブログメンバーの前田が投稿いたします。

Introduction

毎年、福山大学ではアメリカ合衆国から学生を受け入れ、8週間にわたる教育実習を実施しています。このプログラムは「グローバル・ゲートウェイズ・プログラム」と呼ばれ、インディアナ大学、そして今回はボールステート大学との共同で運営されています。今週は、この実習を開始するために来日した3名のティーチング・アシスタント（TA）を迎えることができ、大変うれしく思っています。ミア・トンプソンさん、ジョーイ・ウーリーさん、サラ・ジョイスさんの3名です。これからの8週間、彼らは授業に参加しながら日本の教育現場を体験します。今回は、彼らのこれまでの背景や第一印象について、いくつか質問する機会をいただきました。
Each year, Fukuyama University welcomes students from the United States to take part in an eight-week teaching practicum. This program, known as the “Global Gateways Program,” is run in collaboration with Indiana University, and this time, with Ball State University. This week, we were excited to welcome three teaching assistants (TAs) who have just arrived to begin their practicum. They are Mia Thompson, Joey Woolley, and Sarah Joyce. Over the next eight weeks, they will participate in classes and experience education in Japan. I had the chance to sit down with them and ask a few questions about their backgrounds and first impressions.

Heather: まずは、出身について教えてください。
To start, could you tell me where you’re from?

Mia:私はアメリカ合衆国インディアナ州エイボンで生まれ育ちました。大きな都市のすぐ近くにある小さな郊外の町です。
I was born and raised in Avon, Indiana, United States of America. It’s a small, suburban town right outside of the main city.

Sarah:カリフォルニア州サンディエゴで育ちましたが、10歳のときにインディアナ州のインディアナポリス周辺に引っ越し、それ以来ずっとそこに住んでいます。
I grew up in San Diego, California, but I moved to the Indianapolis area in Indiana when I was ten and have lived there ever since.

Joey:アメリカのオハイオ州出身ですが、現在はインディアナ大学の学生としてこのプログラムに参加しています。インディアナ大学は、私の出身地であるオハイオ州の西にあるインディアナ州にあります。
I’m from the state of Ohio, although I’m participating in this program as a student at Indiana University. Indiana University is in the state of Indiana to the west of my home state, Ohio.

Heather: 日本語を学び始めたきっかけについて教えてください。
When did you start learning Japanese, and what inspired you?

Mia:中学生のときに日本語の勉強を始めました。当時、スペイン語か日本語のどちらかを選ぶ必要があり、もともとはスペイン語を取りたかったのですが、日本語のクラスにいる生徒たちと友達になりたくて、日本語を選びました。最初は日本語や日本文化に強い興味があったわけではありませんでしたが、すぐに大好きになりました。
I began studying Japanese in middle school. During that time, I was given the choice to either take Spanish or Japanese language classes. I had originally wanted to take Spanish, but I wanted to be friends with the students in the Japanese class, so I decided to study Japanese instead. Though I did not start with a great interest in Japanese language and culture, I quickly grew to love it.

Sarah:高校1年生のときに日本語を学び始めました。日本の文化やメディアに興味があり、それがきっかけで日本語にも関心を持つようになりました。メディアを通して初めて日本語に触れたことが、学びたいという気持ちにつながりました。
I started learning Japanese in my freshman year of high school. I decided to start learning it because of an interest in Japanese culture and media. The media gave me the initial exposure to the language which made me curious about learning it.

Joey:中学2年生のときに日本語を学び始めました。当時、中学校を卒業するためには外国語の履修が必須で、私は侍の歴史にとても興味を持っていました。また、テレビ番組で日本語を耳にして、とてもかっこいいと感じたこともきっかけの一つです。
I began learning Japanese in the 8th grade, equivalent to middle school 2nd year in Japan. At the time, taking a world language was a requirement for graduating middle school and I was quite interested in the history of Samurai. Additionally, I had heard the Japanese language in TV shows, and thought that it sounded very cool.

Heather: 福山に来てみて、どんな印象を持ちましたか？
What are your impressions of Fukuyama so far?

Mia:福山はとても美しく、落ち着いた街だと思います。これまでに出会った方々は皆さん本当に温かく迎えてくださり、滞在中に福山の街や福山大学についてさらに知るのが楽しみです。
I think that Fukuyama is a beautiful, peaceful city. Everybody I have met has been more than welcoming, and I am looking forward to learning more about both the city and Fukuyama University during my time here.

Sarah:福山は今のところとても素晴らしい場所です。とても美しく、地元と比べても自然が多い点が気に入っていますし、出会った皆さんもとても親切です。
Fukuyama has been great so far! It’s a beautiful place, I’ve been enjoying the amount of nature compared to my hometown and everyone has been very kind.

Joey:福山はとても素敵な街で、出会った人たちは皆とても親切でフレンドリーです。大学のキャンパスも美しく、分かりやすいので、スムーズに新しい環境に慣れることができました。
Fukuyama is a lovely city, everyone that I have met here are so nice and have been very friendly. The university campus is gorgeous and is very easy to navigate, so it has been a smooth time adjusting!

Heather: 最後に、日本で楽しみにしていることや、この実習での目標を教えてください。
Finally, what are you looking forward to, and what do you hope to achieve during this practicum?

Mia:この実習で最も達成したいことは、日本の教育実践についてより深く学び、日常生活を実際に体験することです。福山での経験を通して、教師としても一人の人間としても成長できることを楽しみにしています。
The biggest thing I would like to accomplish in this practicum is to learn more about Japan’s educational practices and experience normal, everyday life. I am looking forward to the opportunity to grow both as a teacher and as a person through my experiences in Fukuyama!

Sarah:日常生活を体験しながら、少し観光もできることを楽しみにしています。私はアートに関する趣味があるので、そのような活動もできたらいいなと思っています。また、福山大学での滞在中には、言語教育のスキルをさらに伸ばしたいと考えています。英語を教えた経験があまりないので、この機会に経験を積み、スキルを向上させたいです。
I’m looking forward to doing a bit of sightseeing while experiencing everyday life. I enjoy art-related hobbies, so I’m hoping I’ll be able to do something along those lines! As for what I hope to achieve during my time at Fukuyama University, I’m hoping to further develop my language-teaching skills. I don’t have much experience teaching English, so I’m excited to have the opportunity to gain more experience and improve my skills.

Joey:日本に滞在している間、英語が必修科目である環境で教えるとはどのようなものかを実際に体験したいと考えています。私の出身地では日本語は必修科目ではないため、このような環境で授業を行う経験を通して、アメリカでは出会えないような多様な学生や状況に触れられるのではないかと強く感じています。
While I am here in Japan, I want to see what it is like to teach English when it is a compulsory course. Japanese is a non-required course where I am from, so I feel strongly that this experience of teaching in a classroom of a compulsory course will help me see a variety of students and scenarios I may not see back in the US.

3名それぞれの個性や興味、そして日本での学びへの意欲が伝わってくるインタビューとなりました。これからの8週間でどのような経験をし、どのように成長していくのか、とても楽しみです。
It was wonderful to hear each of their unique perspectives and motivations. We look forward to seeing how they grow and what they experience over the next eight weeks at Fukuyama University.

学長から一言：英語教育のTAとして研修中のアメリカからの大学生3人、ジョーイ・ウーリーさん、サラ・ジョイスさん、ミア・トンプソンさん、ようこそ福山大学へ！　本学とインディアナ大学との2014年締結の協定に基づき実施している「グローバル・ゲートウェイズ・プログラム」もすでに12年目。これまで多くに研修生を受け入れました。今年は3人もの受入れですが、全員が日本語の習得者。日本語や日本文化についても、多くの経験を積んで欲しいものです。キャンパスで出会ったら、積極的に声をかけてあげてください。

Three American students, Mia, Joey, and Sarah currently working as teaching assistants (TAs) in English education, Welcome to Fukuyama University! The “Global Gateways Program,” implemented under the agreement signed between our university and Indiana University in 2014, is now in its 12th year. We have welcomed many trainees over the years. We are hosting three students this year, all of them are Japanese language learners. We hope they will gain a wealth of experience with the Japanese language and culture as well.
