Former TA, Karen Returns to Fukuyama University for a Brief Visit

Introduction
毎年、福山大学ではアメリカ合衆国から学生を受け入れ、8週間にわたる教育実習を実施しています。このプログラムは「グローバル・ゲートウェイズ・プログラム」と称され、インディアナ大学との共同事業として運営されています。2024年春、福山大学は嬉しいことにカレン・ウォルドビーザーさんという名の若い教員養成課程の学生を受け入れたことがありました。福山大学での研修を終えた後、カレンさんはアメリカに戻り、教員として就職しました。今週、休暇を利用して再び日本を訪れたカレンさんが福山大学に短期間ながら訪問し、私たちは大いに喜びました。
Each year, Fukuyama University welcomes students from the USA to complete an eight-week long teaching practicum. The program is called the “Global Gateways Program,” and it is in conjunction with Indiana University. In the spring of 2024, Fukuyama University had the pleasure of hosting a young teacher-in-training named Karen Waldbieser. After completing her teaching practicum at Fukuyama University, Karen returned to the United States and got a job as teacher. This week, Karen returned to Japan while on holidays, and we were very happy to welcome her back to Fukuyama University for a brief visit.

もちろん、私たちは彼女がアメリカでプロの教師としてどのように新しい生活を始めたのか、ぜひ聞きたいと思いました。そこで、福山大学での研修中に彼女の指導担当者であったローズ・ジェイソン准教授が、彼女の新しい生活について知るためにインタビューを行いました。以下は、その遣り取りの一部です。
Of course, we wanted to hear how her new life as a professional teacher in the US is going, so Associate Professor Jason Lowes (her practicum advisor during her time at Fukuyama University) sat down and asked some questions to learn about her new life.
Below, is an excerpt from their conversation.

Jason: カレンさん、お帰りなさい。またお会いできて大変嬉しいです。日本へはなぜ来ることになったのでしょうか？
Welcome back, Karen. It is wonderful to see you again. What brings you back to Japan?

Karen: こんにちは。戻ってこられて嬉しいです。皆様に会えなくなって、とても寂しく思っていました。まず最初に、この前日本を訪れたとき、とても素晴らしい経験をさせていただいたため、再度訪問したいと強く願っていました。人々の親切さに触れ、また一人でこの国を旅しても安全だと感じていました。普段は一人旅をしないのですが、ここでは自信を持って一人旅ができると確信していました。そして福山大学での時間は本当に特別なもので、私が教師となる上でたいへん役立ちました。
Hi. It is good to be back. I missed you all so much. Well first, I wanted to come back to Japan because I had such a great experience when I was here before. The people were so kind, and I felt safe exploring the country by myself. I wouldn’t normally travel alone, but I was confident that I could do it here. And my time at Fukuyama University was really special and was very formative in who I became as a teacher.

Jason: 何年生を教えていますか？
What grades are you teaching?

Karen: 私は小学校二年生のクラスを担当しています。子供たちが本当に大好きです。いつも楽とは限りませんし、試練もありますが、全体的に見て、私は今の先生の仕事が大好きで、教えることが本当に楽しいんです。
I’m teaching a second-grade elementary school class. I love my kids. It isn’t always easy, and there are some challenges, but overall, I really enjoy teaching and my job right now.

Jason: 今の時期に授業を休んでもいいんですか？学期の途中ではないですか？
How are you able to be away from your class at this time? Aren’t you in the middle of the semester?
Karen: いいえ、現在秋休み中です。1週間の休暇です。授業は8月1日に始まり、それから休暇はありませんでした。今学期は12月下旬まで続きます。その後、2学期が1月に始まり、5月に終了します。
No. We are on Fall Break right now. It is a one-week break. Our classes start August 1, so we haven’t had a break since then. This semester will go until late December. Then, the second semester will start in January and will end in May.

Jason: 日本の年間スケジュールとは大きく異なりますね。日本に移って、こっちで教鞭を執ることは有り得ませんか？
It is a very different yearly schedule than we have in Japan. Could you see yourself ever moving to Japan and teaching here?
Karen: はい、確かにそのことを考えたこともありました。しかしながら、すぐには実現しないでしょう。目下、私のクラスの児童と学校とをとても大切に思っていますので、離れることは望んでいません。また、大学在学中に奨学金を受給した際、卒業後数年間はインディアナ州で勤務するという条件が付いていました。その契約を果たすにはまだ約4年残っているんです。
Yes, it is something that I have thought about. However, it would not be soon. I love my students and my school right now, so I don’t want to leave them. Also, I got a scholarship when I was at university, and one condition of that scholarship is that I have to work in Indiana for several years after I graduate. I still have about four years left in that agreement.

Jason: 今回の日本旅行では、これまでに東京と京都を訪れました。他にどんなことをしたいですか？
So far in this trip to Japan, you’ve visited Tokyo and Kyoto. What else would you like to do?
Karen: ええ、私のホストファミリーはウサギ島（大久野島）へ行く話をしていました。前回こちらに滞在した際、そこへ行きたいと思っていましたが、残念ながら行けませんでした。
Well, my host family has talked about going to Rabbit Island [大久野島]. When I was here the last time, we had hoped to go but couldn’t.

Jason: その島はとても素敵な場所だと聞いています。もしお出かけになったら、ぜひ写真を何枚かお送りください。
I hear that it is very nice there. If you go, please send me some pictures.
Karen: 分かりました！
I will!

Jason: カレンさん、お会いできて本当に嬉しかったです。次に日本へお越しの際は、ぜひまたお知らせください。あるいは、また立ち寄ってください。
It was lovely seeing you again, Karen. When you come to Japan for your next visit, please let us know or drop by for another visit.
Karen: もちろんです！本日はお会いでき、本当にありがとうございました。皆様と再会することができて、大変嬉しく思っています。
I certainly will! Thank you for meeting with you today. It was wonderful to see everyone again.

Meeting the University President
カレンさんの福山大学訪問の際、学長室に伺う機会も得られました。大塚学長と楽しい会話を交わし、カレンさんはインディアナ州での教師生活について学長に話せたことを大変喜んでいました。
During Karen’s visit to Fukuyama University, she also had the chance to visit the office of the University President. We had a lovely chat and Karen enjoyed telling President Otsuka about her life as a teacher in Indiana.

Visiting Local Attractions
福山大学を訪問した後、カレンさんはホストファミリーと一緒に、地元で人気の観光地である大久野島へ出かけました。この島は英語で「Rabbit Island」とも呼ばれています。カレンさんは、ウサギたちがとても可愛かったこと、そしてそこで食べたソフトクリームが美味しかったと知らせてくれました。
Following her visit to Fukuyama University, Karen went with her host family to a popular local tourist location: 大久野島, which is often referred to in English as ‘Rabbit Island’. Karen reported that the rabbits were super cute and that the soft cream that she ate was delicious.

学長から一言：カレンさん福大へお帰りなさい！英語のTAとして本学の学生諸君に大人気だった彼女が今はアメリカの小学校の先生として活躍している話を聞いて、本当に嬉しく思いました。前回の滞在時に彼女のホームステイ先を提供くださった松岡様ご一家が今回も手厚いもてなしをしてくださいました。親切な人たちに巡り会って、彼女の日本熱はとうぶん冷めそうにありません。また、近い将来、再びお会いすることもあるでしょう。カレンさん、また戻って来て、お訪ねください。いつでも大歓迎です。

Words from the President:　Welcome back to Fukuyama University, Karen! 　Hearing that she, who was immensely popular among our students as an English teaching assistant, is now thriving as an elementary school teacher in America truly made me happy. The Matsuoka family, who kindly hosted her during her previous stay, once again provided generous hospitality. Meeting such kind people means her passion for Japan shows no signs of fading anytime soon. We’ll surely meet again in the near future. Karen, please come back and visit us. You’re always more than welcome.
