Introduction
Each year, Fukuyama University welcomes students from the United States to take part in an eight-week teaching practicum. This program, known as the “Global Gateways Program,” is run in collaboration with Indiana University. Last Friday, we were excited to welcome our newest teaching assistant (TA), who has just arrived to begin their practicum, James Coyne. Over the next eight weeks, James will participate in classes and experience education in Japan. I had the chance to sit down with him and ask a few questions about his background and first impressions.

Heather:
To start, could you tell me where you’re from?
James: I was born in Evanston, Chicago. However, shortly after I was born, my family moved to Grayslake! Grayslake is a small town in very northern Illinois, and I have lived there my whole life.
When did you start learning Japanese, and what inspired you?
James: My dad lived in Japan when he was a kid in the 1970s, and when I was very young he would tell me all about the things he did. He also showed me Ultraman! When I was a kid I wanted to be just like Ultraman, and every episode of Ultraman Tiga that I watched was not subtitled in English, so I wanted to learn Japanese so I could know what Tiga and his help team were doing. Eventually I learned more about the culture, and I decided I wanted to teach here at some point in my life, so learning Japanese was essential!
Heather:
What are your impressions of Fukuyama so far?
James: I love it here. Something that I was not expecting at all was the number of car dealerships! I love cars, and Japan’s car culture is super interesting to me. So, when I arrived on the Shinkansen and saw all the used car dealerships, I got very excited to see as many old and rare cars as I could. So far, I’ve seen some really rare sports cars that would be incredibly expensive to buy in the United States, and I’m sad that I don’t have the ability to somehow buy them. Also, it is much more laid-back here than in Tokyo. When I visited Japan previously, I only stayed in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Hakone. Tokyo and Kyoto are very busy, and I didn’t have much time to relax because there was so much to see, but in Fukuyama I feel like I’m able to breathe a bit and go at my own pace.

What do you like to do outside of your classes at Indiana University?
James: My greatest hobbies are Music, Gunpla Model Kits, and Cars. I’ve played alto saxophone almost my whole life and have played guitar for 7 years. I love to play jazz saxophone and hard rock and metal on guitar. I’ve also been building gunpla for almost 17 years! I have so many model kits I don’t know where to put them all. As for cars, my first car was a 1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans-Am. It’s one of my favorite cars ever made, and because it was a little bit damaged when I bought it, I taught myself mechanic work in order to fix it. It’s my pride and joy, and I adore driving it.

What are you looking forward to and what do you hope to achieve during this practicum?
James: During my time here, I am looking to gain the type of skills that I can only gain by teaching in a different country. I can read and imagine everything I want about international teaching while I’m in the U.S., but the only way I can truly gain those skills is by doing it. Now here I am, doing it. The skills I will learn here I cannot ever learn fully in the United States. This is my time to gain exclusive insight into how to be a better teacher, and I cannot be more excited. As for what happens after I’m done teaching, I am really looking forward to touring the country with my family and girlfriend. We’re going to be going to a lot of the places I didn’t have time to visit last time I was here, and I’m also really excited to show them around Fukuyama University and show them where I have been honing my skills. After this teaching practicum, I will have truly achieved a lifelong goal of teaching English in Japan.
It was wonderful to hear about James’s interest in Japanese culture, his many hobbies, and his dream of teaching English in Japan. We look forward to seeing what he learns and
experiences over the next eight weeks at Fukuyama University, and how he grows as a
teacher.
A Message from the President: Welcome to Fukuyama University, Mr. James Coyne, our trainee from Indiana University! For over 10 years now, through the Global Gateways Program established under our agreement with Indiana University, many students have come to our university to serve as English teaching assistants (TAs) as part of their training to prepare for future careers in education by honing their skills in a cross-cultural environment. While you are the first student with long hair to join us, you embody the spirit of a type of American young person and I understand you have also been a huge fan of Japan since childhood. I hope you’ll not only mentor our students but also engage with them extensively and gain a wealth of experience.
