インディアナ大学からの実習生、サミュエル・ヴァンドリーさんを紹介します！

Introducing the new student teacher from Indiana University, Samuel Vandrey. Samuel has come to Fukuyama University as part of the Global Gateways Program, a program that gives teachers in training the chance to practice teaching abroad. Samuel will be an assistant teacher at Fukuyama University for 8 weeks.

インディアナ大学からの新しい実習生、サミュエル・ヴァンドリーさんをご紹介いたします。サミュエルさんは、グローバル・ゲートウェイズ・プログラムの一環として福山大学に来日し、今後8週間、ティーチングアシスタントとして勤務します。どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

I interviewed Samuel to find out a little about him.

サミュエルさんについて少し紹介できるようにインタビューを行いました。

Where are you from? Tell us about your hometown.

出身はどちらですか？またその地域について教えてください。

My hometown is Santa Maria, California. It’s a town of about 100,000 people, about four hours from Los Angeles. It’s mostly a farming town known for its strawberries and celery, among other things. There’s an annual rodeo in the summer.

私の故郷はカリフォルニア州サンタマリアです。ロサンゼルスから(車で)約4時間ほどの(場所にある)、人口約10万人の町です。イチゴやセロリなどで知られる農業の町です。夏になると毎年ロデオが開催されます。

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do in your spare time?

趣味は何ですか？また、何をするのが好きですか？

My hobby is playing video games. That’s how I communicate with my friends. I also like photography, especially film photography. I like to take photos of landscapes, but also close-ups, and sometimes I do portraits. I’m planning on taking some photos while I’m here in Japan. I brought three cameras with me. Here are some of my photos:

私の趣味はビデオゲームです。ゲームで友達とコミュニケーションを取るんです。そして写真も好きです、特にフィルム写真が好きです。風景を撮るのが好きですが、それ以外にもクローズアップ写真(接写)も撮影しますし、時にはポートレート(人物写真)も撮ります。日本にいる間に何枚か写真を撮ろうと思い、カメラは3台持ってきました。ここに私の撮った写真をいくつか紹介します。

Global Gateways for Teachers has many host countries. Why did you choose Japan?

インディアナ大学のGlobal Gateway for Teachersプログラムには多くの受入国がありますが、なぜ日本を選んだのですか？

I came to Japan because I’ve been studying Japanese for about three and a half years, and I wanted to come to Japan and improve my Japanese while doing my student teaching.

日本に来たのは、3年半ほど日本語を勉強していたので、日本に来て、日本語を上達させながら学生指導の実習をしたかったからです。

Tell me about your Japanese studies.

日本語の勉強について聞かせてください。

I studied at Indiana University in America for two years, and then went to study for a semester at Nanzan University in Nagoya. When I returned to America, I took an intensive summer course in Japanese.

アメリカのインディアナ大学で2年間学んだ後、名古屋にある南山大学に1学期留学しました。アメリカに戻ってからは、日本語の集中夏期講座を受けました。

What motivated you to study Japanese in the first place?

日本語を学ぼうと思ったきっかけは何ですか？

Hosting Japanese students. My family was a host family for Japanese high school students from Aomori. I was able to go to Aomori to visit them.

(私の家で)日本の学生を受け入れていました。私の家族は青森から来た日本の高校生のホストファミリーをしていました。そして私は青森に行き、彼らを訪ねることができました。

What are your impressions of Fukuyama?

福山の印象はどうですか？

I’ve come to Japan four times, and this is my first time in Fukuyama. It’s more rural than the places I’ve experienced before. Coming here is interesting because things are very different from the big cities I’ve experienced before. It’s my first time to come in Spring and it’s my first time to Sakura. They’re very pretty.

日本には4回来たことがあり、福山は初めてです。今まで行った場所と比べるといくぶん都会から離れたところだと思います。ここ福山に来て興味深いことは、これまで行ったことのある大都市とはとても違っているところです。そして春に来るのは初めてですし、桜も初めて見ました。とてもきれいですね。

Welcome to Fukuyama University, Samuel, who has come to our university to serve as an English teaching assistant under the exchange agreement between Indiana University and our university.　I am sure that your fluency in Japanese, which you have developed over three and a half years of Japanese language study and particularly one semester of study abroad in Japan, will be of great help to you in teaching English. During the period of your stay here, please use your photographic skills as a hobby to preserve many happy memories in the form of photographs.
