2005年度　UCR日本文化研修
2005 UCR Japan Culture Program

福山大学とカリフォルニア大学リバーサイド校（ＵＣＲ）は平成２（１９９０）年に、姉妹校協定を締結した．平成３（１９９１）年から平成１３（２００１）年まで、集中日本語研修を行なってきた．平成１７(２００５)年に、カリフォルニア大学学部学生を対象に初回の日本文化研修を実施した．

Fukuyama University and the University of California at Riverside became sister schools in 1990. From 1993 to 2001, Fukuyama University held intensive Japanese courses for Riverside students each summer. In the summer of 2005, the first Japan Culture Course for University of California students was held at Fukuyama University.　The following is a summary of the 2005 Japan Culture Program.

研修の目的：　カリフォルニア大学学生を対象に、伝統的な日本文化と今日の日本経済等の実情を実地に理解する機会を与えるとともに、本学学生にカリフォルニア大学学生との交流の機会を与え、両大学間の国際交流を一層促進すること．

Purpose: The main objectives of the course are:
· to give University of California students an opportunity to be exposed to both modern and traditional Japanese culture
· to provide interested Fukuyama University students with a chance to meet and interact with American students.
and
· to advance cultural exchange between Fukuyama University and the University of California at Riverside.

研修の概要：　研修は、本学の五学部による各１コマの講義、茶道、華道等伝統的日本文化の実習、宮島、広島等の見学、マツダ、シャープ等の工場見学等から構成された．米国の学生らしく、講義、実習、見学のいずれにおいても、活発な質問が出された．本学学生も延べ４０名あまりが参加し、米国学生との交流を深めた．ＵＣＲ学生全員が福山、尾道のホームステイ先に滞在し、それぞれに心温まるもてなしをいただき、日本の生活についても大いに理解を深めることが出来た．伝統的日本文化の実習には、ふくやま国際交流協会、国際ソロプチミスト福山の皆さんに積極的にご協力いただく等幅広い市民の皆さんにご協力いただいた．なお、この研修はＵＣＲアジア学科の２単位の授業科目として認定された．

Program Outline: The program included lectures from representatives of each of the five faculties at Fukuyama University, Japanese cultural experience workshops, visits to Miyajima ( http://www.miyajima.or.jp/miyakan2/index.html ) and Hiroshima, and tours of manufacturing plants including Mazda and Sharp. The American students were active learners full of questions. Over 40 Fukuyama University students volunteered as helpers. All the visiting students stayed with Japanese families in the Fukuyama and Onomichi areas enabling them to develop warm relations while deepening their knowledge of Japan. The culture workshops were made possible by the cooperation of the Fukuyama City Association for Global Exchange, the Soroptimists International of Fukuyama, and many other volunteers in the community. Participants successfully completing the course received two credits in Asian Studies from UCR..

Curriculum:
(1) Cultural experience workshops gave students the opportunity to try Japanese food, flower arrangement, tea ceremony and traditional Japanese clothing, Zen and pottery. They also visited a Noh display.

(2) Students toured Mazda Motor Corporation, JFE Steel Corporation, Sharp Corporation, Amano Jitsugyo Co., Ltd. and Sanwa Manufacturing Corporation.

(3) Lectures were given by the Fukuyama University faculty, as is shown in the table.

各学生の事情がばらばらだったためいろいろなルートで福山入りした．成田着で新幹線で来るもの，広島空港に降りるもので時間もばらばらになって，担当教員汗だくであった．無事全員ホームステイ先に引渡し落着．

The UCR students all arrived in Fukuyama safely and meet their homestay families. Some braved the long trip from Tokyo getting a crash course on the Japanese rail system while their homestay families and university staff anxiously awaited their arrival. Others arrived directly at the nearby Hiroshima Airport.

文化研修：　日本料理の研修　　　　　ふくやま国際交流協会，国際ソロプチミスト福山　共催 Japanese Cooking Workshop
	福山中央公民館にて，ふくやま国際交流協会と国際ソロプチミスト福山の御協力により日本料理研修を兼ねた歓迎会を行った．ソロプチミストのおよびボランティアのかた約２０人が研修を指導してくださった．ボランティアの中には英語と日本語が堪能なカナダ人が一人おられた．中国新聞，読売新聞の取材があった． With the cooperation of 20 volunteers from the Soroptimists International of Fukuyama and the Fukuyama Association for Global Exchange, students helped prepare and then feasted on various Japanese dishes.

見学会　鞆の浦コース　　Sight-Seeing on Tomonoura
鞆，仙酔島渡船場までスクールバスに乗り，仙酔島にわたってしばらく散策した．夕方鞆，保命酒の製造元　有限会社入江友三郎本店を見学した．

Students rode a school bus and then took the short boat ride to Sensuijima for a short walk on the scenic island and then went back to Tomonoura, the home of medicinal sake, homeishu.

オリエンテーション，総長学長表敬 Orientation, Meeting the Chancellor

	10日間の研修日程，内容，評価法などに関するオリエンテーションを行なった．その後，宮地総長と吉永学長を表敬訪問した． After a brief orientation to Fukuyama University, life in a Japanese homestay and the Japan Culture course, students met Chancellor Miyachi and President Yoshinaga of Fukuyama University.

会社見学：　マツダ株式会社 Mazda Motor Corporation Plant Tour
	午後マツダ博物館と組立てラインを見学をした．新車の展示，マツダ車の歴史，ロータリーも含むエンジン，車のデザインから製造行程について英語で説明を受けた．車社会のアメリカの学生にとっても，自動車工場の見学ははじめての者が多く，とくに，ロボットで作る最新式の工場には感銘を受けたようだ．ほとんどの学生から活発な質問が出た．また製造ラインの見学では熱心に見入る学生が多くみられた．　 Students visited the Mazda Museum and assembly line. Students learned how cars are assembled, as well as the history of Mazda .

講義：　日本刀の科学　　工学部　井上教授
Lecture on "The Science of the Japanese Sword” by Professor Tatsuo Inoue from the Faculty of Engineering

日本刀とその素材であるたたら製鉄について，刀と太刀の違い，もののけ姫（多くのアメリカの学生が知っていました）とたたらの関係，また，実物の刀を見せながら，伝統工芸の歴史と科学的立場から解説した．とくに焼入れ時に生じる波文と反りのコンピューターシミュレーションが興味をひいた．学生から矢継ぎ早に意見や質問が飛び交い，日米の教育構造の違いがよくわかるとは，担当の井上教授の弁．

Students learned about Japanese swords, the materials used to make them, and different kinds of swords. Students were able to see an actual sword while listening to the explanation from a historical as well as a philosophical standpoint. A computer simulation of the forging process was also used. Professor Inoue was impressed by the American students’active participation and questions.

文化研修：　華道　　 Ikebana Workshop (http://www.ikenobo.jp/english/index.html)

	学内にて，池坊福山支部長垣内先生，国際ソロプチミストの方3名のご指導で研修を行った．華道は学生達に好評で全員が作品の持ち帰りを希望した．華道の実況中継をFMふくやまが教室から5分間行なった．UCRの学生にインタビューを行なった．　 Ms. Kakiuchi, Ikenobou Fukuyama Branch Manager Ms. Kakiuchi and three volunteers from the Soroptimists introduced the students to the art of ikebana, Japanese flower arrangement. The participants then tried their hand at arranging. Students are pictured with their creations.

福山市の喜多流能楽堂にて能楽専門の方2人から指導をうけた．山陽新聞の取材があった．

文化研修：　陶芸　　 Pottery Workshop

	大学構内の陶芸室で全員悪戦苦闘した．みんな熱心に陶芸に取り組んでいたが，かなり作品は分厚くなったので釜の中で破裂する可能性があると陶芸担当教員から注意があった．最終日に間に合うように焼いてもらった．　　　　　　　　　　　 In the pottery room at the college, participants tried the traditional art of Japanese pottery. Volunteers from the pottery club at the university later fired and glazed the students’ creations so　they would be ready to take back to America.

会社見学　：JFEスチール株式会社　西日本製鉄所福山地区 JFE Steel Corporation, West Japan Works Plant Tour
	宮地総長が特別参加．ライフサービス部　加藤様から工場の説明を受け，ビデオを見た後，所内全体をバスで廻って，熱間圧延工場を見学した．残念ながら設備は動いていなかったが，さすがに大きな設備で感動した様子だった．スナップは所内展望台から工場全体を見下ろしたあと，撮影．UCRの学生からの質問：溶鉱炉は鉄でできているのになぜ溶けないのか？いい質問だとほめられた．正解は溶鉱炉内部はレンガが貼ってあるからとのこと．　　　　　　　　　　　　　 After watching a video on the plant and steel production, students and Chancellor Miyachi put on their hard hats and were off to tour the steel works. They are pictured on the hill overlooking the plant.

講義：薬剤学入門と薬剤学実習　－　製剤の歴史とメンソレータムにみる日米比較　薬学部　田中助教授など　 A short course in pharmaceutics and a laboratory of pharmacy by Associate Professor Tetsuo Tanaka from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
	薬学部教員の指導を受け，薬つくりに挑戦した．最初の約70分は，薬の歴史や使用方法などについての講義で，途中，学生達とのディスカッションを交えながらの進行であった．残りの20分では，実際に軟膏剤（メンソレータム）の調製を行った．軟膏基剤，メントールやカンファーなどの薬用成分を量り取り，均一になるまで一生懸命かき混ぜ完成させた．自分たちのつくったものをおみやげに持ち帰り喜んでいた．終了後，学生達は講義を行った田中先生と写真を撮るなどし，終始和やかな雰囲気に感じられた．実習時間が短かったため，少々かけ足になった． Associate Professor Tetsuo Tanaka from the gave a short course in pharmaceutics and a laboratory of pharmacy. After learning about the history of medicine, students tried their hand at making their own under Professor Tanaka’s guidance.

文化研修：茶道および和服着付　　　　 Tea Ceremony and Kimono Workshop
	福山八幡宮で実施，大好評であった．浴衣が全員着られればもっと良かった．ランゲージパートナーのツベテリナさん一人のみであったが，彼女は大活躍だった．　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　 At Fukuyama Hachimangu Shrine students watched the tea ceremony and learned the proper manners for drinking tea. Afterwards, two students volunteered to be dressed in kimonos. Other students were able to wear Japanese traditional summer wear, yukatas. 2005.7.1　午前 Morning
講義：日本経済の新発見　　経済学部　幸島客員教授 Lecture on “new discovery of the Japanese economy.” by Visiting Professor Kojima

クイズを出したり，質問をしたり，質問を受けたりして，学生との双方向の授業を行なった．日本の資産は個人部門に集中しており，個人資産の活用が日本経済活性化のために必要なことを，米国経済と比較して説明した，学生の質問は活発であった．　日本の場合は，個人の金融資産が預貯金に集中しており，株式への投資は少ないことを説明し，米国の場合は逆に預貯金は少なく，株式等への投資が多いこと等を説明した．　また，日本人男性はあまり覇気がなく，日本女性にとってあまり魅力的でないなどと説明し，学生たちの興味と笑いを誘った．日本が少子高齢化に向かうことなども具体的に説明した．　　全体として説明が明快で平易であり，経済に疎い学生にも理解できたと感じられた．　最後に，今回の指定図書の新渡戸稲造が30代に書いた「武士道」を取り上げて説明し，日本人の精神について理解させる努力をした．
Visiting Professor Kojima helped students make a “new discovery of the Japanese economy.” He used quizzes, asked questions and answered questions to encourage the students to be active in finding out about the trends in the Japanese economy and to explore differences between The Japanese and American economies.

2005.7.1　午後 Afternoon
文化研修：座禅 Zen Workshop
	沼隈郡弥勒の里　神勝寺にて座禅の研修を行った．到着すると，まず大広間で僧侶から仏教について説明を受けた．仏像等についても説明を受けた．更に，なぜ木魚を使うのか，なぜ魚なのかといったことについて説明を受けた．その後で，学生一人ひとりが和尚さんと記念写真を撮った．　学生の中で，Ｊａｎｅは米国で10年も座禅をしていたと述べた．Ｋｈａｎｈは親がベトナム出身で，家に仏壇があるとのことであった．こうして何人かの学生は，仏教についてかなり具体的に承知し，関心も高いことを示した．　次に，座禅をするために禅堂に行った．まず入り口で入り方を習った．各自座布団を二枚取り，座布団の使い方，手の組み方等を習った．座禅のコツは，背筋をまっすぐ伸ばすこと，息をしっかりと吐くことであることを学んだ．　次に実際に座禅を行なった．希望者は"けんさく"という長くて平らな板で背中を叩いてもらった．これは修行中の気の緩みを正してもらうためとのことであった．多くの学生が"けんさく"で叩いてもらった．20分ほどの座禅を二回行い，全員大満足であった．　なお，このプログラムは福山大学留学生教育振興協会が交通手段を含めてお世話くださったもので，厚地副会長，島田幹事が同行してくれた．　 First a Buddhist priest gave a brief explanation of Zen and answered the students’ questions ranging from the very basic to those of one student who had been practicing Zen meditation for 10 years (pictured left). Next students all experienced a guided Zen meditation.

	あいにくの大雨で，高速道路が一部使えず，また電車も不通になった．それでもなんとか宮島見学と平和公園見学を行なった．平和公園および原爆資料館での反響は大きく，時間の不足を漏らす学生が多かった． Under rainy skies, students visited historic Miyajima Island and Hiroshima Peace Park. Pictured are students outside the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum (http://www.pcf.city.hiroshima.jp).

見学会：　尾道・瀬戸田コース Onomichi and Setoda Island Trip
	尾道市千光寺と西の日光と呼ばれる瀬戸田耕三寺および平山郁夫美術館を見学した．天気は終日雨で，最悪だったが，学生は楽しんだようすである．千光寺へは海岸べりを通ってロープウェーまで歩いた．帰りは雨が小ぶりだったのと歩いた方が早いので，坂を降りた．坂道の街は興味深い様子だった．帰りは尾道商店街を通ったが，皆店に入りたかったよう．時間がなくて通り過ぎた．　瀬戸田に向かうフェリーが１時間30分に1本しかないため，昼の食事時間が30分しかなかった．前もってレストラン(尾道駅裏のItaliaレストランCoraggio)を予約しておいた．学生には魚介類にアレルギーがあるもの，菜食のものがいるので食事は要注意である．　フェリーに間に合わなくなって,一緒に行った日本人の学生諸君に, 先に走ってもらって,　船がが出るのをとめてもらった．それでもUCRの学生諸君は走りださなかった．これはたぶんお国柄だろう．　午後瀬戸田耕三寺，平山美術館を訪れた．耕三寺はアメリカ人好みのモダンな美術館という感じで彼らにはとてもいい印象を与えた．平山美術館も興味深かったようである． Students started in the scenic port city, Onomichi, taking a ropeway up to Senkoji Temple. After lunch they boarded a ferry bound toward Setoda Island and it’s famous Kosanji Temple and Hirayama Ikuo Art Museum. 講義：日本のつくる漁業への挑戦、特に種苗生産について　　生命工学部　伏見教授　　　 Lecture on "a view of the fishing industry in Japan" by Professor Fushimi from Faculty of Life Science
	日本のつくる漁業のための種苗生産の歴史と現況について，現状，問題点，展望を　ビデオ（英語）とスライドを使って講議した．学生からは，日本とアメリカの栽培漁業の違いについての質問があった． Professor Fushimi used a video and lecture to give students a view of the fishing industry in Japan, including the current situation, problems and future outlook. In particular he dealt with the history and necessity of restocking. Students asked about the differences between Japan and America.

見学会：　福山市日本はきもの博物館，日本郷土玩具博物館コース Japan Footwear Museum and Japan Folk Toy and Doll Museum
	土井紀子さんをはじめとする国際ソロプチミスト福山の方々もこられ，丸山館長が自ら英語で館内紹介をしていただくことになり，雨でうっとうしい日でしたが，充実した時間が過ごせた．　　　　　　　　 Museum Director Maruyama and Soroptimist volunteer, Ms. Doi, took the students on a short journey through Japanese history as shown through her toys and shoes. 会社見学：シャープ株式会社　福山工場
Sharp Corporation Fukuyama Plant Tour

シャープ株式会社では，会社の概要の説明を受け，それから清浄度の高い工場に入った．防塵服に着替えるのにおおわらわだった．超LSIなどのナノテクノロジーに支えられた工場は，実験室を思わせる雰囲気を感じたようだ．また，廃液処理についての説明をうけ，設備見学を行なった．　

After an overview of plant operations and lecture on Sharp’s efforts toward zero pollution, students changed into clean suits the high-tech LSI production factory.

2005.7.5　午前　Morning
会社見学：野実業株式会社(本社福山市)　里庄第2工場　および　　三和製作株式会社　 Amano Jitsugyo Co., Ltd. and Sanwa Manufacturing Corporation Tours
岡山県里庄町に乾燥食品製造の天野実業株式会社を訪問した．英語版ビデオを見た後工場見学を行なった．工場では天野実業顧問の高山氏（Tony）が，難しい技術的な英語を含め，丁寧でわかりやすく学生達に英語で説明してくださり，学生達も満足しているようであった．福山市今津町の工作機械メーカである三和製作株式会社を訪問した．木下社長，野田常務，通訳の女性の方の3人が応対された．会社説明を受けたあと，説明のビデオを見て，工場見学を行なった．　予定より約30分早く大学に戻ったが，その後研修生に陶芸の焼き上がりを渡したり，評価提出についての説明を行うことができたので，時間的に助かった．　　　　　　　 Students visited the Amano and Sanwa factories where they saw videos before going on plant tours. During the Sanwa tour Mr. (Tony) Takayama explained the freeze-drying process to students in English and then provided a tasty product sample. At the Sanwa plant Company President Kinoshita, Mr. Noda and three translators made all the students welcome.

2005.7.5　午後 Afternoon
修了証書授与，歓送会 Certificate Ceremony and Farewell Party
	吉永学長が各研修生に修了証書を授与した．また研修の新聞記事のコピーと，研修中に撮影した写真とが，記念品として各研修生に渡された．その後，関係者全員が集まって歓送会をおこなった．福山大学留学生教育振興協会の石井会長から挨拶があり，各研修生が研修の感想を一言ずつ述べた．研修生たちと教員記念写真を撮った．歓送会にはホストファミリーのかたがたも参加された． 10日間の研修の終了をなごりおしく学生諸君と歓談しておられた． Fukuyama University President Yoshinaga presented students with not only their course completion certificates but also the newspaper clipping in which they were featured and photographs. Then all the homestay families, program volunteers and staff joined the students to celebrate the completion of the program. Fukuyama University International Student Committee Chairperson Ishii and three of the UCR students gave touching speeches about their experiences in Japan. Among the picture taking, all joined to say good bye and thank you.
